Kings Road Improvements, Shalford

Updated plans October 2025

In April 2024, we asked you for feedback on three options to enhance the public space in Kings Road in Shalford.

The plan that the majority of residents who engaged with the process preferred was option three, which involved turning some common land into parking spaces in addition to the improvements listed below.

Making changes to common land requires gaining common land consent, which can be a lengthy process. As this hasn’t commenced yet, the timeframe for delivering the project has become tighter.

Therefore, we are proposing to progress without making changes to the common land – ensuring we can deliver the improvements on a much shorter timeline.

his means we’ll be developing option two from last year’s consultation which is broadly similar while avoiding the common land. This option also received significant support from respondents. Revised plans in option two will:

  • narrow the width of the junction of Horsham Road and Station Approach and widen and resurface the pavement for pedestrians.
  • extend the existing pavement on Horsham Road northwards to join up with Kings Road (D208), the shortcut that passes through the shops, and Station Approach. This will connect the bus stop with the village area.
  • change the traffic flow of Kings Road (D208) into a two-way road. Drivers that come out of Station Approach or Kings Road will be able to turn left onto Horsham Road.
  • introduce a raised table at the junctions of Horsham Road, Station Approach and Kings Road (D208).
  • install pedestrian crossing points with tactile paving across Kings Road and Station Approach.
  • pedestrianise Kings Road (D208) from no.3 (the café) to where it joins the A248 Kings Road and close it to motorised traffic. The remaining part of Kings Road (D208) can be used as shared space between motorised traffic and pedestrians. Vehicle access to Boundary Court will be maintained.
  • widen the pavement along Kings Road (D208) and resurface it. Retain at least three parking spaces on the eastern side with one dedicated to Blue Budge holders.
  • introduce a raised table at the entrance to Boundary Court with tactile paving on both sides of the entrance.
  • create up to two layby parking spaces with proposed 20min maximum stay alongside the A248 near the southern end of Kings Road (D208), with no impact on common land.
  • enhance the public space with greenery and street furniture outside the shops on the south end of Kings Road.
  • remove the bollards from that area and replace them with street furniture including planting to prevent illegal parking.
  • consider options to protect the common land on the western side of Kings Road (D208) and prevent unauthorised parking.

Feedback following our engagement event

Following the engagement event in July, the project team have since analysed all the responses received, both online and in-person.

Analysis of the feedback has shown ‘Option three’ to be the most popular. This option will involve closing Kings Road and turning it into a shared public space. Access to Boundary Court for residents will be maintained at all times and parking spaces will be moved onto an area of common land, with the potential of two additional layby parking spaces. We will also introduce more seating and planting outside the shop fronts.

Option three designs which have been described above.

This option is subject to a detailed design process which will include additional surveys and safety audits, as well as approval for the use of common land. We are working in partnership with Guildford Borough Council to move the process forward. We are also working on finalising timescales and will keep you informed with the latest updates on this website.
