The Main Street Quick Build Project

The City of Tampa and the West Tampa CRA are putting the focus back on Main Street as part of an upcoming project in West Tampa. The Main Street Quick Build, from Armenia Avenue to North Boulevard, aims to help revitalize this historic corridor through critical safety improvements and major quality of life upgrades.

Funded by the West Tampa CRA, the $300,000 project is the seventh Quick Build project completed by the City of Tampa. Quick Builds use smart design and lower cost materials like paint and pavement markings to implement projects in a shorter timeframe and at a lower cost compared to traditional construction methods.

The Mobility Department's in-house paving team will re-resurface Main Street from North Armenia to North Rome Avenue.  New roadway markings will be added along Main St. including more than 220 marked on street parking spaces benefitting the local businesses and residents in this area.  The parking spaces and narrower roadway encourages drivers to slow down, creating more visibility and a safer roadway.  Initially, the parking will be free.

Reflecting Tampa's Vision Zero goals, additional upgrades include improved crosswalks, painted curb extensions to protect pedestrians, and a safer four-way stop at Main and North Albany Avenue will replace the current traffic signal, which has reached its end of life and will not be replaced.  A nearby portion of Main Street is on the City's High Injury Network, providing a prime opportunity to reduce dangerous crashes in the area.

Historically, Main Street was a commercial district in Tampa through the 1950's, prior to the addition of I-275. Today, is it surrounded by six schools, five parks and a library. It is also linked to the future West River development via Rome Avenue providing additional connections to the Downtown core, Ybor City, Armature Works and the waterfront itself. This is another important element in the story of West Tampa's development.

Work will begin in January and take about a month to complete.
