Year 2 Ped Safety PID #119936

The City of Lorain has identified locations of high demand and need where pedestrian safety improvements are recommended. The locations identified are within the City of Lorain in Lorain County, and were identified with the assistance of ODOT District 3, city council members, and residents of the City of Lorain. The proposed project is meant to improve the overall safety of pedestrians by increasing the visibility of pedestrians, shortening crossing lengths, slowing down vehicles approaching a crossing, and reducing the frequency and severity of pedestrian crashes.

This project seeks to improve pedestrian safety by sidewalk gap-filling and improving pedestrian crossings. Crossings can be improved by high-visability markings, advance yield markings and yield signs, standard signage, rectangular rapid flashing beacons, and/or ADA curb ramps with detectable warnings. The intent of this project is to focus on several locations requiring pedestrian crossing improvements, sidewalk repair, and gap-filling sidewalk in order to create a more contiguous sidewalk network, within the City of Lorain. The gap-filling sidewalk projects are intended to reduce the amount of pedestrians walking on the shoulder of heavily traveled roads.

Locations for gap-filling and sidewalk repair include:

  • West Erie Ave (US6) east of Kolbe, south side of roadway
  • West Erie Ave (US6) and Madison Ave
  • SR 611 Broadway to Colorado Ave.
  • Leavitt Road (SR58) south of West 24th Street, west of roadway
