Evacuation Ready Tips
Share your best preparedness tips with neighbors across Washoe County. Whether you’ve evacuated before or are getting ready for the first time, your ideas can help others stay safe and move quickly when it matters most.
Washoe County is committing to a comprehensive effort to strengthen our community’s resilience in the face of wildfires and other emergencies that could require evacuation. By collaborating with local agencies, community groups, and residents like you, we aim to identify the specific risks our neighborhoods face and the challenges that arise during evacuations. This study will take a data-driven approach while centering the lived experiences and concerns of our residents to ensure our solutions are grounded in the real needs of the people we serve.
Your voice will play a vital role as we work together to create a safer future for Washoe County. Through surveys, interactive tools like community maps, and public meetings, residents can highlight areas of concern, so these insights can shape decisions and guide solutions. As the study progresses, we will keep the community informed with updates and provide details on how your feedback is shaping the outcomes. Together, we can build an evacuation plan that prioritizes safety, coordination, and clarity for everyone.
When & How Evacuations Occur
When a wildfire or emergency threatens a community, multiple agencies work together to ensure evacuations are safe, coordinated, and clear. In a fire here’s how the decision and communication process typically unfolds:
1️⃣ Fire Agency Evaluates & Orders the Evacuation
The fire agency leading the incident (Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue, Reno Fire Department, NV Division of Forestry, etc.) determines when an area is unsafe and issues an evacuation incoordination with the appropriate State and Federal agencies.
2️⃣ Law Enforcement Implements the Evacuation
The Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement agencies are responsible for carrying out the evacuation, notifying residents in the evacuation zone, and ensuring priority routes stay clear and safe for travel.
3️⃣ Emergency Management Communicates & Supports
Washoe County Emergency Management helps coordinate messaging, sends public notifications, and provides resource support. They ensure that alerts, maps, updates, and preparedness guidance reach the community quickly and accurately.
In short:🔥 Fire orders it → 🚓 Law enforcement executes it → 📣 Emergency Management communicates it.
