Cycle Movement Strategy Phase 2: Queensway

History of Scheme

The Westminster Cycling Strategy provides details on the range of projects that we will be developing over the coming years to encourage more people to take up cycling, to improve facilities for existing cyclists and to improve safety.

The Cycling Movement Strategy Phase 2 for Queensway is one of many schemes that has been prioritised for implementation later this year, subject to more detailed design work and consultation.

In November and December 2021 Westminster consulted on the ‘Cycling Movement Strategy’ temporary cycle schemes. The consultation sought stakeholder views on retaining the 11 temporary cycle schemes installed across the City of Westminster as part of the City Council’s Covid response. The consultation received a great level of support in retaining the temporary cycle lanes whilst we develop proposals to create permanent facilities.

We are now in the process of developing permanent proposals for the 11 cycle schemes.

Summary of Proposals

The proposals include:

  • Changing of Westbourne Park Villas to one way eastbound at the junction with Porchester Road.
  • Moving the existing taxi rank on Porchester Road to Porchester Square to allow for mandatory cycle lane on Porchester Road.
  • Reduction in cycle lane width on Queensway and Porchester Road to 1.5m to provide additional carriageway width for general traffic.
  • 0.5m buffer strip to be added between cycle lane and parking bays on Queensway to offer better safety for both cyclists and drivers exiting parked vehicles.
  • Proposed 3 no. Pay by Phone bays to be added on Queensway to replace the loss of bays on Porchester Square to the proposed taxi rank.
  • Additional 3 residential bays to be added on Queensway.
  • 0.5m buffer strip to be added between cycle lane and parking bays on Inverness Terrace to offer better safety for both cyclists and drivers exiting parked vehicles.
