Once upon a time, High Streets were at the heart of neighbourhoods and community life. However, pandemic closures and subsequent changing work patterns, and the continued rise of online shopping and the cost of living crisis has proved challenging for the flourishing of High Streets.

We believe that High Streets can promote community cohesion and build local connections, celebrating culture, creativity and the diversity of our neighbourhoods. They can cultivate inclusive, safe and sustainable public spaces for everyone, providing greater opportunities for social exchange and public life. High Streets can also contribute to building resilience in the local economy by promoting enterprise, training and skills, and enable a flexible and diverse offer throughout the day and night.

The North Paddington High Streets Programme is focussed on improving Harrow Road and other local high streets in the area, creating places where essential goods, services and public spaces are available within a short walking distance of resident’s homes.

We have developed a menu of ideas for improvement along the High Street based on past community feedback. Alongside our interactive exhibition in our Pop Up Engagement Hubs on Harrow Road, we are listening to residents, local businesses and visitors through our online survey (LINK) to understand which of the proposed ideas for your High Street matter most to you. This will help us priorities which ideas to take forward.
