Works Update

Westminster City Council, in partnership with Transport for London, is delivering a new cycle route, Cycleway 43, connecting Hyde Park with the existing facilities at Gloucester Place. Cycling and safety improvement works are being undertaken from Bayswater Road through Stanhope Place, Connaught Square, Porchester Place, Portsea Place, and Kendal Street to George Street.

The works are being undertaken in a number of phases, as outlined in the Phasing Plans below.

Key information:

Section A

  • Ongoing closures: Connaught Street remains fully closed between Connaught Square west and Portsea Place. This is to complete the drainage connection. Further details have been sent to local residents and businesses via letter.
  • Weeks commencing 23 March and 30 March 2026: Resurfacing works on Connaught Street, Connaught Square and Seymour Street are due to take place.

Section B

  • Cadent Gas currently have a full road closure on George Street between Montagu Mews West and Montagu Street. This may extend if further excavations are needed to identify the source of a gas leak here. These works are not associated with the Hyde Park to Marylebone Cycleway construction works.

Looking back

Phase 1 – 3: Kendal Street Junction with Porchester Place

The two utility covers on the southeast and southwest corners of the junction have been brought up to the new footway level.

All work has now been completed at this junction.

Phase 4: Connaught Square (North) Junction with Portsea Place

Drain connections on Connaught Street, between Porchester Place and Connaught Square North have been completed. Connaught Street remains closed between Portsea Place and Porchester Place while the remaining drainage connections are installed.

A new lamp column is being relocated and installed at the southeastern corner of the junction.

Phase 9/10: Stanhope Place (South)

A road closure remains in place between Connaught Place and Bayswater Road.

On the eastern side, the new extended kerb line and paving have been complete between Connaught Place and Bayswater Road.

The tree pit resin has been applied, and fencing has been adjusted to allow more space for pedestrians.

On the western side, the paving is almost complete between Connaught Place and Bayswater Road. Fencing will be adjusted to allow more space for pedestrians.

Fencing has now also been placed between Frederick Close and the completed paving. Work has begun here to remove and relay kerbs in preparation for removing the existing paving that remains.

Existing lighting is being removed and replaced with new lighting on both the east and west sides of Stanhope Place.

Phase 4: Connaught Square (North) Junction with Portsea Place

Connaught Square will remain fully closed between Connaught Square west and Portsea Place. This is to complete the remaining drainage connection.

The new lamp column will be installed and powered on the southeastern corner of the junction.

Phase 9/10: Stanhope Place (South)

The new lighting will be installed along the east and west sides of Stanhope Place.

On the western footway, works will continue to install the kerb, level and pave between the completed and extended cycleway through to Frederick Close.

Works will then move to the eastern footway between Connaught Place and Seymour Street to remove and relay existing kerbs, level and pave to the completed section near Seymour Street.

The post box on the junction with Seymour Street will be removed.

Looking Back

Phase 1: Bryanston Square (East)

The eastbound carriageway has been closed between Seymour Place and Bryanston Square East.

Phase 4: Montagu Street

Due to the road closure and ongoing works from Cadent Gas, works on the Hyde Park to Marylebone Cycleway are limited in this area. Further excavations from Cadent Gas have now been completed and it is likely they will extend beyond the current closure. This is to be confirmed by Cadent Gas.

The new cycle-friendly kerb line and paving between Montagu Mews West and Great Cumberland Place have been completed. This area has been grouted and all fencing removed.

The carriageway nearest to the new kerb line has been temporarily asphalted.

Works have now moved west of Montagu Street and have begun to install the new cycle-friendly kerb line towards Gloucester Place. The section nearest Montagu Street is complete.

Looking Forward

Phase 1: Bryanston Square East

The new lamp column is to have a new head attached and be connected. Additionally, the old signpost will be removed.

The construction team will return at a later date to complete the northeastern corner.

Phase 4: Montague Street

Works will continue to excavate and install new cycle kerbs between Portman Towers and Gloucester Place.

Phase 5: Montagu Square (East)

If Cadent Gas works allow, Hyde Park to Marylebone Cycleway works will move to Phase 5 once Phase 4 works are completed.
