Works Update
Westminster City Council, in partnership with Transport for London, is delivering a new cycle route, Cycleway 43, connecting Hyde Park with the existing facilities at Gloucester Place. Cycling and safety improvement works are being undertaken from Bayswater Road through Stanhope Place, Connaught Square, Porchester Place, Portsea Place, and Kendal Street to George Street.
The works are being undertaken in a number of phases, as outlined in the Phasing Plans below.
Section A

Upcoming key dates:
- 23 February 2026: Connaught Square will be fully closed between Connaught Square west and Portsea Place for two weeks. This is to complete the drainage connection. Further details have been sent to local residents and businesses via letter.
- Week commencing 30 March 2026: Resurfacing works on Connaught Street, Connaught Square and Seymour Street are due to take place during these two weeks. Specific dates are to be confirmed and will be shared in due course.
Looking back
Phase 1 – 3: Kendal Street Junction with Porchester Place
All major work has been completed at this junction.
Utility covers have been raised on the northwest corner of the junction. The two on the southeast and southwest corners of the junction are still to be brought up to the new footway level.
Phase 4: Connaught Square (North) Junction with Portsea Place
The road surface will be replaced when it is resurfaced in late March and early April, however, at the moment, it has been temporarily asphalted while the junction remains fully open to vehicles.
Phase 9/10: Stanhope Place (South)
A road closure remains in place between Connaught Place and Bayswater Road.
The new, extended kerb line and new paving have been completed at the junction at Stanhope Place and Bayswater Road. The lane closure on Bayswater Road has now been removed, and the crossing point is back in use.
On the eastern footway, full excavations have been completed in preparation for extending the kerb line. This area has also been levelled, and paving is ongoing towards Connaught Place.

Phase 4: Connaught Square (North) Junction with Portsea Place
On 23 February 2026, Connaught Square will be fully closed between Connaught Square west and Portsea Place for two weeks. This is to complete the drainage connection. The utility cover on the west side of Connaught Square will be relocated away from the junction during the closure. Further details has been sent via letter to local residents and businesses.
Phase 9/10: Stanhope Place (South)
Paving will continue on the eastern footway before grouting.
On the western footway, works will continue to install a new, extended kerb line. Levelling and paving along this footway from Bayswater Road toward the Connaught Place junction will follow.
Three new lamp columns are to be installed along Stanhope Place.
Section B: George Street

Phase 1: Bryanston Square (East)
The eastbound carriageway has been closed between Seymour Place and Bryanston Square East.
Phase 3: Bryanston Square (West)
All fencing has been removed, and the junctions are now open to traffic.
Phase 4: Montagu Street
The westbound closure of George Street between Gloucester Place and Montagu Mews South remains in place. Pedestrians have been safely diverted into the carriageway around the western side of the junction.
Excavations and installation of the new kerbs on the western side of the junction at the top of Montagu Street have been completed. The footway has also been levelled and paved here.
Cadent Gas are currently on site at this location and have excavated in two areas after reported smells of gas during excavations on the western side of the Montagu Street junction. They have introduced ventilation holes and excavated to find the main gas pipe. Works here cannot continue until this has been resolved, as these emergency works take priority.

Looking east, excavations for new kerb line between Great Cumberland Place and Montagu Mews West now complete.

Pedestrians have been safely diverted into the carriageway around the western side of the junction at Montague Street.
Looking Forward
Phase 1: Bryanston Square East
The new lamp column is to have a new head attached and be connected. Additionally, the old signpost will be removed.
The construction team will return at a later date to complete the northeastern corner.
Phase 3: Bryanston Square West
Paving on both sides of Bryanston Square West will continue.
The two lamp columns and Belisha beacons will be connected and powered up, and the old lamp columns and Belisha beacons on the western footway will be removed.
New cycle racks will be installed outside of the Wetherby Preparatory School.
Once paving is finished around the junction, excavations will begin on the George Street side of Wetherby Preparatory School.
Phase 4: Montague Street
New cycle kerbs will be installed.
Works on the southern side of the junction will move to the building side in small phases, retaining resident access. This is to remove the existing paving and lay new paving in these areas.
This will then be repeated on the other side of the junction.
Once the paving between Montagu Mews West and Great Cumberland Place has been completed, excavations will start for the new cycle kerbs between Montagu Street and Portman Towers to be installed.
After Cadent Gas complete the emergency works, paving will be completed from Montagu Street through to Montagu Mews West.
