You said, We did

During our recent public consultation, we engaged with stakeholders to gather valuable feedback. Here's a summary, demonstrating our commitment to responsiveness and continuous improvement.

Cargo Bikehangar

We Asked

As part of our ongoing strategy to expand secure cycle parking across Westminster, we trialled the first cargo bike hangar at St. John’s Wood Terrace in December 2023. The installation aimed to meet the growing demand for secure storage for non-standard bikes, including cargo and adapted bikes.

Between 7 August and 18 September 2024, we ran a public consultation to understand residents' thoughts on the future rollout of cargo bike hangars across the borough. The consultation was not location-specific; it aimed to gather general feedback to inform future planning and delivery.

We wanted to understand:

  • Views on the current on-street cargo hangar at St. John’s Wood Terrace and potential for wider rollout.
  • Any concerns or improvements you’d like us to consider.
  • General support, opposition or ideas related to secure cargo bike storage.

You Said

There were 172 responses to the consultation, with many expressing support for the scheme and sharing ideas for how and where cargo bikehangars could be delivered in future. Alongside this, some concerns were raised around accessibility, security, and the use of space. Respondents offered a wide range of constructive feedback and suggestions that will be considered as part of future planning.

Through the feedback, a number of key themes emerged:

  • Support & Demand: Many respondents were enthusiastic about the idea, describing it as a “brilliant initiative” and “much needed.” There is high demand for more cargo bikehangars, particularly in high-density residential areas.
  • Space & Location: Several responses requested specific locations (e.g. near schools, and shopping areas) and raised concerns about balancing the space used for hangars versus other street functions like car parking.
  • Security Concerns: Some respondents emphasised the importance of robust security measures, including locks, video surveillance, and theft prevention strategies to ensure safety.
  • Accessibility & Inclusion: A few comments highlighted the need to ensure the hangars are accessible for people with disabilities or mobility issues and that rollout plans consider inclusivity.
  • Concerns and Criticism: While most people were supportive, a few had concerns. Some felt the cargo hangars would only help a small number of people, and others were worried about them taking up space on the street.
  • Sustainability Support: A number of respondents supported the initiative in alignment with broader climate goals, active travel strategies, and reducing car dependency.

We Did

Based on the feedback received during the consultation, the Council has:

  • Used the feedback gathered to guide future planning. Work is currently underway to assess the feasibility of additional installations in suitable locations across Westminster.
  • Made the trial cargo bikehangar at St. John's Wood Terrace permanent.

Although no further cargo/adapted hangars have been installed at this stage, the consultation has provided a valuable foundation for our long-term strategy to providing inclusive, secure, and sustainable cycle storage across Westminster.

The City Council will continue to engage with the local community for future roll out of further secure storage.
