Greening Westminster: Making Our City Greener Together
Since 2017, Westminster City Council has been working with local community groups to create more green spaces across the borough—ensuring everyone has fair access to high-quality outdoor areas. Thanks to these efforts, we’ve seen a growing number of inspiring projects, including Covent Garden Playground and Children’s Nature Garden, St John’s Church Grounds in Kensal Green, and The Onion Garden in Victoria, to name just a few.
The programme has three key objectives - to improve and increase the:
- Quantity of green assets across the city
- Quality of our open spaces and green infrastructure
- Impact of our green assets, delivering a range of benefits to individuals, communities, and the environment.

About the project
Celebrating Success and Building Connections
Over the past two years, the programme has achieved the following:
- 9% increase in overall applications
- 44% more community-led projects
- 67% boost in engagement in areas with limited green space
- Introduced community drop-in sessions to connect with lesser heard groups such asolder residents, parents of young children, people with disabilities and ethnic minority communities.
- Introduceda new feature to the grant process: launch events to help celebrate achievements, reach new communities and foster inclusion.
The Council has prioritised wards where green spaces are most needed, including Bayswater, Belgravia, Harrow Road, Marylebone, Westbourne, and more. Since 2024, the Council have engaged around 400 residents, including voices from lesser-heard groups—helping make Westminster greener and more inclusive.
Greening Westminster: Funding Opportunities for 2026/2027
We’re excited to announce that applications for the Greening Westminster programme will open in February! This year, we’re continuing to support projects that bring more green spaces to our city—and we want you to be part of it.
To help address the key priorities of the programme, the Council will encourage project teams to host launch events to celebrate their completed greening projects. These events will help raise awareness in the community and showcase the positive impact of the newly transformed green spaces.
