Construction due to begin on 15 July 2024.

The Shepherd Market Public Realm improvement scheme aims to bring pedestrian and community benefits to the Shepherd Market area, with pedestrianisation of the Market square, more footway space, greening, and natural stone paving.

Works will begin on Shepherd Street from 15th July and will proceed in three initial phases to late November 2024. 

The scheme takes a pedestrian-centric approach, with Shepherd Market Square becoming a new pedestrian-only area. The scheme will deliver the following improvements: 

• Repaving all footways within the scheme
• Creating planted areas of greening
• Widening footways on Shepherd Street
• New street lighting
• Kerbside and parking changes, with part of Shepherd Street becoming one-way
• Pedestrianisation of the Market Square
• New public benches
• Carriageway resurfacing 
• New street trees
• Eastbound contraflow cycling on Shepherd Street

Loading and servicing, and waste collection areas will be provided during works, and a map has been provided to illustrate this for Phase 1A.
