Background
Westminster City Council, in partnership with Transport for London (TfL), is proposing to deliver a new cycle route, Cycleway 51, connecting Kilburn with Marylebone.
The scheme aims to enhance cycle safety, accessibility, and connectivity between Kilburn and Marylebone and will benefit all people who want to walk, wheel and cycle in the area.
Between Marylebone Road and Melcombe Place, Harewood Avenue will become a one-way street southbound for motorised road traffic, with a dedicated northbound contraflow cycleway in place.
North of Melcombe Place, Harewood Avenue will remain a two-way street for motorised vehicle traffic.
To enable the introduction of this new road layout, the direction of traffic flow on Harewood Row and Hayes Place must switch to allow buses to continue to serve Marylebone Station.
More information on these enabling works and the overall scheme is available here.
Enabling Works: Construction Update
Looking back
In the past week, we have excavated the kerb line for a new and extended footway on the western side of Harewood Avenue at the existing zebra crossing outside BNP Paribas.
We have installed a drop curb and tactile paving here, along with a drainage channel. With drainage installed, we will complete the repaving of the new footway this week.
The central island at this zebra crossing outside BNP Paribas has also been removed. This will be levelled and prepared for temporary resurfacing.

Looking forward
This week, we will complete the repaving of the new footway on the western side of Harewood Avenue outside BNP Paribas, and the temporary resurfacing of the area where the traffic island used to be at this zebra crossing.
We will remove the other traffic island in the enabling works area (currently at the existing zebra crossing outside the Marylebone Sports Bar and Grill) and level this area for temporary resurfacing.
Toward the end of the week, the required signage changes will be made in advance of the road reopening with the switch in the direction of traffic flow from Saturday 28th March.

FMC marshals will be on site from this date for two days to guide road users through the new road layout on Harewood Avenue, Harewood Row, and Hayes Place.
The Commonplace news feed will be updated when the enabling works have been completed.
