Works Update

Westminster City Council, in partnership with Transport for London, is delivering a new cycle route, Cycleway 43 (C43), connecting Hyde Park with the existing cycleways at Gloucester Place. Cycling and safety improvement works are being undertaken from Bayswater Road through Stanhope Place, Connaught Square, Porchester Place, Portsea Place, and Kendal Street to George Street.

The project area is illustrated in the map below.

A map of the C43 project area.

Section A: West of Edgeware Road

A number of additional safety improvement measures are now being progressed following the completion of the Stage 3 Road Safety Audit (RSA3). These works include:

  • A new raised table at the Archery Close / Connaught Street junction.
  • Installation of corduroy tactile paving adjacent to the Hyde Park entrance to highlight the shared-use area.
  • Additional reflective measures on bollards at the Stanhope Place / Bayswater Road junction.
  • Installation of scooter stands at the Seymour Street / Stanhope Place junction.
  • New give-way markings on the south-eastern footway of Connaught Square East.

These enhancements are designed to further improve safety and accessibility for all road users.

Section B: George Street

Key Information

  • Significant progress has been made along George Street, with paving and segregated cycle kerbs now installed between Gloucester Place and Seymour Place, with only a small section still to be completed.
  • Works were temporarily paused in August while structural investigations and remedial works were undertaken to vault structures under the highway at several locations along the route.
  • Construction activities have now resumed and are progressing on site. Investigations and repairs remain ongoing at a number of locations, including Cumberland Mansions and areas around Montagu Street, which are required before some highway improvements can be completed.
  • The construction team returned to site on 1 September and is currently installing segregated cycle kerbs between Forset Street and Seymour Place.
  • Deep drainage works and gully connections took place in September at the Forset Street junction to support completion of the cycleway.
  • During our works, pedestrian walking routes will always be maintained but routes may be longer as fencing will be in place along the kerb edge.
  • Pedestrian access to properties will be always maintained. We will work with you when we are working directly in front of any pedestrian access / egress point or residence.
  • Please note that planned works and timings are subject to change. Any updates or changes as works progress will be communicated via Commonplace

Looking Back

Forset Street Junction

Around the south side of George Street’s junction with Forset Street  and the north side of George Street’s junction with Forset Street   we have completed deep drainage works and gully connections to support the completion of the cycleway.

Brown Street Junction

We have begun to install gully connections to support drainage at George Street’s junction with Brown Street as of 9 October.

Following these works, we plan to repave the footways around the junction to create higher quality public realm for pedestrians.

These works will involve some minor excavations to establish the new kerb line before levelling, concreting and paving the new footway.

Cycle segregation kerbs will be installed in this area to continue the cycleway toward Edgware Road.

Looking Forward

Brown Street Junction

We plan to repave the footways around the Brown Street junction toward the end of October.

Subsequently, cycle segregation kerbs are planned to be installed in this area to continue the cycleway toward Edgware Road.

George Street (Between Seymour Place and Montagu Square)

Works to resurface the carriageway between Gloucester Place and Seymour Place are planned to start from w.c. 19 October. This will help to deliver the final finished road surface along this section of the route.

Seymour Place Junction

Works to install gully connections to support drainage on the south side of George Street’s junction with Seymour Place are scheduled to take place from w.c. 26 October.

Following these gully works, resurfacing on the north side of George Street’s junction with Seymour Place will commence throughout the remainder of October, November, and into early December.

We plan to repave the footways around the Seymour Place junction in November to create higher quality public realm for pedestrians.

These works will likewise involve some minor excavations to establish the new kerb line before levelling, concreting and paving the new footway.

To facilitate the works in this area, the Seymour Place junction will be subject to temporary closures and changes to traffic flow between w.c. 19 October and early December.

Traffic management will be put in place to direct road users to diversion routes.

Final Cycleway Resurfacing Works

Following completion of the main cycleway segregation works, the cycle track surface will receive its final asphalt wearing course. The cycle track will remain closed until the final surfacing, road markings and associated safety measures have been completed and the route can be safely opened for public use.
