Berkeley Square Public Realm Proposals
Westminster City Council, in partnership with BEAM and CO-RE, is proposing exciting improvements to the public realm on the southern half of Berkeley Square, Bruton Street and Bruton Place. By investing in the public realm, the proposals aim to create a lively new place to shop, work, eat, live and stay. A previous project was implemented in 2018 at the north of Berkeley Square, which has created a more pedestrian friendly, accessible environment. This project seeks to extend the improvements across the whole of Berkeley Square, and through Bruton Street and Bruton Place.
The proposals, which are designed to create more welcoming spaces for everyone, include:
- Widening pavements on Berkeley Square to make it easier and more comfortable to move around the area on foot.
- Planting of new trees to enhance biodiversity and improve the appearance of the streetscape.
- Installing new seating to create spaces for residents, workers and visitors to spend time and meet.
- Installing new heritage features, such as heritage style lamp-posts, which celebrate the character and history of the area.
- Creating raised junctions to enable a more accessible pedestrian environment without restricting access.
- Redistributing parking spaces to improve visibility of Berkeley Square and the existing public art installation.
- Installing of new sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), including rain gardens, to manage rainfall and minimise flooding.
- Implementing traffic calming measures, such as raised tables, to ensure drivers comply with the 20mph speed restrictions.
- Redistributing parking locations for hired e-bikes, to reduce cluttered parking on pavements.

The proposals aim to make Berkeley Square, Bruton Street and Bruton Place greener, easier to navigate and better connected for residents and visitors, whilst respecting the area’s character and heritage.
The arrangement plan below shows the proposed improvements to the area.
