Works Update

Westminster City Council, in partnership with Transport for London, is delivering a new cycle route, Cycleway 43, connecting Hyde Park with the existing facilities at Gloucester Place. Cycling and safety improvement works are being undertaken from Bayswater Road through Stanhope Place, Connaught Square, Porchester Place, Portsea Place, and Kendal Street to George Street.

The works are being undertaken in a number of phases, as outlined in the Phasing Plans below.

Key information:

Section A

  • 30 March – 2 April 2026: Resurfacing works on Connaught Street, Connaught Square and Seymour Street are due to take place. More information on this is to be sent to residents and businesses via letter.

Section B

  • Cadent Gas currently have a full road closure on George Street between Montagu Mews West and Montagu Street. This may extend if further excavations are needed to identify the source of a gas leak here. These emergency works are not associated with the Hyde Park to Marylebone Cycleway construction works.

Looking back

Phase 1 – 3: Kendal Street Junction with Porchester Place

All roads are now open at this junction.

A new lamp column is to be installed and connected before the resurfacing that will complete all works at this location.

Connaught Street is now reopened to traffic

Phase 9/10: Stanhope Place (South)

All major construction activities are now complete on Stanhope Place.

On the eastern side, final paving around the Stanhope Place and Connaught Place junction has been completed, as well as along the section between Connaught Place and Seymour Street.

The post box on the Stanhope Place and Seymour Street junction has been removed due to redundancy. This was requested by Royal Mail.

Fencing remains in place around the new cycle lane, for which the asphalting will begin on 30 March.

On the western side of Stanhope Place, paving between Seymour Street and Bayswater Road has been completed.

The cycle route along Stanhope Place has been prepared for resurfacing, which will begin on 30 March

Looking forward

Phase 1 – 3: Kendal Street Junction with Porchester Place

A new lamp column is to be installed and connected before the resurfacing that will complete all works at this location.

Phase 9/10: Stanhope Place (South)

The new lighting columns will be installed along the east and west sides of Stanhope Place.

Most of the fencing will be removed from site, with only the fencing around the area to be asphalted to remain.

Resurfacing Section A

The area will be resurfaced from 30 March to 2 April 2026. During this time, there will be full road closures throughout Section A. A letter has been sent to residents and businesses, notifying them of these works. Resurfacing phasing plans are shown below:

Looking Back

Phase 3: Bryanston Square (West)

All fencing has been removed, and the junctions are now open to traffic.

Phase 4: Montagu Street

Due to the road closure and ongoing emergency works from Cadent Gas, works on the Hyde Park to Marylebone Cycleway are limited in this area. Further excavations from Cadent Gas have now been completed and it is likely they will extend beyond the current closure. This is to be confirmed by Cadent Gas.

The new cycle-friendly kerb line and paving between Montagu Mews West and Great Cumberland Place have been completed. This area has been grouted and all fencing removed.

The carriageway nearest to the new kerb line has been temporarily asphalted.

 Phase 5: Montagu Square (East)

The section of paving and new cycle friendly kerbs between Gloucester Place and Gloucester Place Mews have been completed.

Completed paving and cycle friendly kerbs

Phase 6: Montagu Square (West)

Excavations have begun from Montague Mews West towards Bryanston Square. This is to create new cycle friendly kerbs and re-pave.

Ongoing excavations along the kerb line

Looking Forward

Phase 6: Montagu Square (West)

Excavations will be completed along the kerb line and then levelled to install the new cycle friendly kerbs. Existing paving will then be removed, levelled and repaved.

Due to the ongoing Cadent Gas emergency works, further Cycleway 43 works may be re-phased.
