Works Update
Westminster City Council, in partnership with Transport for London, is delivering a new cycle route, Cycleway 43, connecting Hyde Park with the existing cycleways at Gloucester Place. Cycling and safety improvement works are being undertaken from Bayswater Road through Stanhope Place, Connaught Square, Porchester Place, Portsea Place, and Kendal Street to George Street.
The works are being undertaken in a number of phases, which will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Section A: West of Edgeware Road
A number of additional safety improvement measures are now being progressed following the completion of the Stage 3 Road Safety Audit (RSA3). These works include:
- A new raised table at the Archery Close/Connaught Street junction.
- Installation of corduroy tactile paving adjacent to the Hyde Park entrance to highlight the shared-use area.
- Additional reflective measures on bollards at the Stanhope Place/Bayswater Road junction.
- Installation of scooter stands at the Seymour Street/Stanhope Place junction.
- New give-way markings on the south-eastern footway of Connaught Square East.
These enhancements are designed to further improve safety and accessibility for all road users and are scheduled to be implemented during October 2026.
Minor works to install speed humps are due to take place in early October.
Section B: George Street
Key Information
- Following significant progress earlier in the year, works were temporarily paused in August while structural investigations and remedial works were undertaken to vault structures under the highway at several locations along the route. Construction activities have now resumed and are progressing on site. Investigations and repairs remain ongoing at a number of locations, including Cumberland Mansions and areas around Montagu Street, which are required before some highway improvements can be completed.
- The construction team returned to site on 1 September and is currently installing segregated cycle kerbs between Seymour Place and Forset Street.
- Deep drainage works and gully connections are due to take place throughout the remainder of September at the Forset Street junction to support completion of the cycleway.
Looking Back
Significant progress has been made along George Street, with paving and segregated cycle kerbs now installed between Gloucester Place and Seymour Place, with only a small section still to be completed.
During planned weekend closures earlier this summer, cycle segregation kerbs were successfully installed across Montagu Mews South and Montagu Mews West, helping to complete this section of the route.
Following a short break in construction activity, the team returned to site on 1 September and has continued installing new segregated cycle kerbs between Seymour Place and Forset Street. These works remain ongoing.

Looking Forward
Over the coming weeks, work will continue on the installation of cycle segregation measures and associated streetscape improvements between Seymour Place and Edgeware Road.
Deep drainage and gully connection works are also scheduled at the Forset Street junction. These works are an important part of the final highway improvements and will support completion of this section of the cycleway.
Completion of carriageway resurfacing works between Gloucester Place and Seymour Place, helping to deliver the final finished road surface along this section of the route is planned.
Following completion of the main cycleway construction, the cycle track surface will receive its final asphalt wearing course. Although the cycle track is already at its finished height and separated from traffic, it will remain closed until the final surfacing, road markings and associated safety measures have been completed and the route can be safely opened for public use.
Works to the section between Brown Street and Forest Street on the north side of George Street to install new cycle-friendly and segregated kerbs are planned.

Planned Resurfacing Works
Works to complete carriageway resurfacing works between Gloucester Place and Seymour Place during the Wetherby Prep School half-term week, from Monday 19 October until Friday 30 October, helping to deliver the final finished road surface along this section of the route.
