Cleveland Street Cycleway construction update - February 2026
Looking back (early Feb 2026)
Phase 1
We have re-aligned the zebra crossing due to the large tree roots. The crossing point and large tree remain fenced off. We anticipate this crossing will be brought into use following completion of surfacing and lining works.

The crossing point has been moved further north due to tree roots.
Phase 3
We have re-aligned the crossing point as described above.
We have substantially completed the footway paving in Phase 3. Trees will remain fenced off until tree resin is applied at the base.

The crossing point has been moved further north due to tree roots.
Phase 4
We have substantially completed the paving on both sides of the New Cavendish Street junction with Cleveland Street. This side of the junction is now open and most of the fencing has been removed.
Excavations on the Howland Street side of the junction, for the new traffic signals and supporting infrastructure are dug. Fencing remains in place around the open excavations.
TfL have removed the existing traffic signals and installed temporary crossing points. These will remain in place until new traffic signals are installed and commissioned by TfL.
Phase 6
On 23 February the team began works in Phase 6, the Foley Street junction with Cleveland Street.
A small material compound has been set up on the northern side of Foley Street, and excavations around the King and Queen Pub have begun.
Looking forward (end Feb 2026)
Phase 4
Supporting infrastructure for the traffic signals will be installed prior to the signal posts. We will then begin to pave. BT will replace 3 existing utility covers, and we will then return to pave-in the new covers.
The temporary traffic signals will be removed once the new traffic signals are commissioned by TfL.
Phases 5 & 8
There is a delay to works outside Bedford Passage and Middlesex House. More information will be provided in a future update.
Phase 6
Hand excavations will continue on the King and Queen Pub side of the junction (north west corner). Once excavated we will install new kerbs, level and pave (including tactile paving on the Cleveland Street façade of the pub).
Works in advance of installing the Belisha beacons and signposts will also take place.
Once we have completed the north west corner we will switch to the south west corner and start to excavate the existing kerb line, remove existing paving, level and start to lay new paving.
Road closure notice: Foley Street west of Cleveland Street 23/02/2026 – 04/03/2026 08:00 – 17:00 for footway repaving.
Phase 7
Road closure notice: Riding House Street west of Cleveland Street 23/02/2026 – 17/03/2026 08:00 – 17:00 for footway repaving.
