Cycle Movement Strategy: Northumberland Avenue
Following a review of the existing temporary scheme, a permanent scheme has been developed which formalises the temporary scheme with a number of improvements proposed that further improve cyclist safety. We would like to understand the views of the public on this proposal before a decision is taken on implementing the scheme.
History of Scheme
The Westminster Cycling Strategy provides details on the range of projects that we will be developing over the coming years to encourage more people to take up cycling, to improve facilities for existing cyclists and to improve safety. The Cycling Movement Strategy Phase 2 is one of many schemes that has been prioritised for implementation later this year, subject to more detailed feasibility, design work and consultation.
Summary of Proposals
The proposals include:
- Visual segregation (wands) on approach to the junction with Trafalgar Square
- Introduction of protective 0.5m wide buffer zone between existing drop off bay and cycle lane to protect cyclists
- Proposed eastbound 1.5m cycle lane with floating parking and wands along Northumberland Avenue from Northumberland Street up to Craven Street to provide a clear continuous segregated cycle lane
- Proposed wands positioned at the start of mandatory cycle lane at junction with Victoria Embankment and Whitehall Place to ensure vehicles do not overrun cycle lane
- Refresh existing road markings where needed
