Half Penny Steps Footbridge Public Art Commission
Half Penny Steps Canalside Improvements

From March to September 2024, we undertook programme-specific engagement to better understand aspirations for the Canalside in North Paddington, in which Half Penny Steps was identified as a priority site for immediate development.
Since then, Westminster City Council together with residents and stakeholders have set out to transform Half Penny Steps into a vibrant Canalside terrace. The plan includes renewed planting, feature lighting, and seating that gives onto a proposed new community mooring point, adding life and activity to the area. The bridge, a significant meeting point between the two boroughs, will be elevated into a piece of public art with a new feature colour and lighting scheme. This transformation aims to create a lively and inviting space that enhances community interaction and engagement with the canal.
Based on community feedback and technical studies, the proposals include:
- Lighting – Appointed Dekka Studios
- Public Art – Appointed George King Architects
- Landscape – Appointed Untitled Practice
Across all commissions, the goal is to design spaces that reflect shared community values and create pride.
