Marylebone to West End Cycleway Route Alignment

Introduction

An east-west Cycleway across Marylebone and Fitzrovia has been under consideration by the Council for many years. Cycleway 27 exists to the north of the area but there is very little provision for people cycling south of there. This process aims to identify a Cycleway alignment between Cycleway 27 to the north and Oxford Street to the south. A new Cycleway could connect sections of the network to the east and west and provide a safe, attractive and convenient route through the area. The Council seeks to achieve this in a way that minimises impacts on other road users and residents, and where possible, delivers a range of wider benefits such as improved pedestrian crossings, more trees and other planting, and find solutions to other local issues.

Transport for London's (TfL) demand analysis suggests there are more people that would join the existing people cycling if this route were to be delivered to a high quality. Connections to other north-south routes and onward routes at either end will also help with this growth. The Council aims to cater for that demand and enable people to make healthy and sustainable travel choices.

Potential Alignments

Five route alignments have been identified and assessed (see map also):

Our Suggested Alignment

The Manchester Square Route is the Council’s suggested alignment because it delivers a two-way route for cyclists that is close to Oxford Street, links into other cycling connections to the east and west and planned north-south intersecting routes, requires a relatively low degree of change to many streets, and has a low impact on other road users. Most importantly, the route would be a pleasant and enjoyable ride along quiet and interesting streets that have relatively few points where people need to stop to wait.

All new Cycleways in Westminster are assessed using Department for Transport’s Cycling Infrastructure Design (LTN 1/20) guidance. This document sets out the five requirements for a good cycle route, which include:

Additional important considerations outside of LTN1/20 that impact on the feasibility of a cycleway.
