Tulip Wand Trial Sussex Gardens

Westminster City Council is proud to be trialling an exciting piece of cycling infrastructure along Sussex Gardens — the Tulip Cycle Wand, a beautifully designed form of light segregation for cycle lanes developed by Pitman Tozer Architects.

Ahead of the installation, students from Hampden Gurney C of E Primary School took part in a creative workshop where they had the opportunity to decorate a number of these wands. This hands-on session not only introduced children to the importance of road safety and sustainable travel, but also allowed them to contribute directly to the future of their city’s streetscape.

Inspired by poppies and sunflowers, the Tulip Wands are made from recycled materials and will serve as a flexible, visually engaging barrier between cyclists and motor traffic. The installation forms part of a 24-month trial to assess safety, durability, maintenance, and public perception — including a consultation launching this June.

This initiative is a fantastic example of how thoughtful urban design and early engagement with young residents can help shape safer, greener, and more vibrant public spaces.
