The Proposals
The Blomfield Road Cycle Permeability scheme aims to improve cycling access and safety along Blomfield Road in Westminster. By promoting active travel, we aim to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and create a safer environment for both cyclists and pedestrians.
This proposal includes the installation of a new contraflow cycle lane along Blomfield Road between Westbourne Terrace Road and Warwick Avenue. This includes a proposed new cycle traffic signal on the west side of the junction of Blomfield Road and Warwick Avenue to ensure cyclists can safely cross this junction.
The Blomfield Road Cycle Permeability scheme aims to allow cyclists to travel both ways along the existing carriageway. The scheme will enhance cyclist safety by adding clear signage and road markings that formalise cyclist movements and reduce the risk of collisions with motor vehicles. Additionally, it is expected to help shorten cyclist travel times through the area by offering a more intuitive and direct route. By providing infrastructure that makes cycling safer and a more convenient option for people of all abilities, the proposal hopes to encourage greater uptake of cycling in the area for residents and visitors alike. This is in line with our commitment to creating a more sustainable and liveable city.
The proposals include:
- Providing a contraflow cycle lane (eastbound) on Blomfield Road between Westbourne Terrace Road and Warwick Avenue.
- Addition of a new push button for cyclists and a new dedicated cycle signal phase at the west side of the signalised junction of Blomfield Road and Warwick Avenue, to allow cyclists exiting Blomfield Road via the contraflow to pass through the signal junction safely.
- The addition of 'no loading at any time' and double yellow parking restrictions on the southwestern end of Blomfield Road, to ensure the road is kept clear from parked vehicles and allow for the safe passage of cyclists with oncoming vehicles around the bend of the road.
- Relocation of the car club bay and resident parking bay 5m to the west, to allow for safer vehicle movement into Blomfield Road. Note, there will be no changes to the total number of resident parking bays on Blomfield Road.
- Addition of a new proposed turning lane and painted cycle symbol (from Westbourne Terrace Road onto Blomfield Road).
The design drawings (Proposal Plans) can be found in the downloads section of this page and show all proposed changes to Blomfield Road and its junctions.
It is expected that if the scheme is approved, due to the minimal changes to the road that will be required to implement the scheme (signage and lining), that there will be only slight interference during the construction phase of the project.
