Play Streets

Welcome to Westminster City Council's Play Street consultation page

The impact of opening up streets for children to play and for the community to get together has been shown to build a higher sense of trust and belonging, allowing people of all ages and walks of life to connect with each other and lead active, healthy and happy lives.

Views were shared on a proposed play street on Northumberland Place between Talbot Road and Artesian Road.

This consultation ran from the 8th December 2023 - 2nd January 2024 and is now closed.

Please refer to the Timeline for scheme progress and decision.

The project and associated consultation was led by Westminster City Council.

In April 2019, Westminster City Council introduced a temporary play street scheme, as part of the My Westminster ActiveStreets programme, along Northumberland Place (between Talbot Road and Artesian Road) to:

  • Improve air quality, and
  • Create an environment for children to play.

As a result of the temporary play street scheme, Westminster City Council proposed to make Northumberland Place a permanent play street in August 2021 which progressed to Traffic Management Orders consultation in May-June 2021.

As a high level of objections were received, the scheme was placed on hold. The design proposals have been reviewed and re-developed into two different proposals following the feedback received because of the Traffic Management Order consultation.

We welcomed you to share your views on a proposed play street on Northumberland Place between Talbot Road and Artesian Road. You had your say on which option you would like to see progressed by filling in the questionnaire.

The impact of opening up streets for children to play and for the community to get together has been shown to build a higher sense of trust and belonging, allowing people of all ages and walks of life to connect with each other and lead active, healthy and happy lives.

These proposals build on the temporary play streets scheme that was introduced in 2019 on a temporary basis and previously consulted with stakeholders. These were two proposals which received feedback.
