What's Next on the Warwick Avenue Public Realm Project
We’re getting in touch with everyone who took part in the Warwick Avenue Public Realm Project consultation to share an update on the scheme.
Following careful consideration of all feedback received, the Council has now approved a revised design that responds directly to the main issues raised during consultation. The decision to progress the scheme was confirmed through a Cabinet Member Report which has been approved by the Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Development.
How the final design responds to feedback:
- The revised scheme proposes to:
- Deliver value for money by focusing investment where it will have the greatest public benefit within a reduced budget
- Protect residential parking, with no parking bays removed
- Support local movement, retaining local access, bus routes and taxi activity
- Address traffic, pollution and safety concerns through targeted interventions that reduce conflict and improve visibility
- Discourage anti‑social behaviour by encouraging positive use of space, alongside improved lighting, CCTV, wayfinding and joint working with Public Protection, Licensing and the police
The final design includes:
- Safer and clearer pedestrian routes, including accessible crossings
- Public realm and highway changes to reduce pedestrian, cyclist and vehicle conflict
- Targeted greening, including Sustainable Drainage (SuDS) to improve flood resilience
- Greening around the station ventilation shaft to improve its appearance
- Improved lighting, recycling facilities and overall legibility, while respecting local character
- 12 of the 18 taxi refreshment bays retained, with no substantial impact on operations
- A small reduction and relocation of under‑used motorcycle bays, subject to a Traffic Management Order (TMO) consultation
Budget:
£710k has been invested to date in surveys, design development, consultation, feasibility work, highways engineering and internal costs. A further circa £2.9m has been approved to take the scheme through detailed design and delivery, including an allowance for risk and contingency.
Next steps:
The Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Development has approved the latest design and associated costs via a Cabinet Member Report. Following this, detailed design work will progress in Summer 2026. A Traffic Management Order consultation will also be conducted before progressing with construction works.
