Cycle Movement Strategy: Westbourne Terrace

Westminster City Council is proposing permanent cycling improvements along Westbourne Terrace to make local streets safer and more accessible for everyone. The plans include upgraded cycle lanes with kerbed segregation and improved signalised pedestrian crossings. By delivering infrastructure that makes cycling, walking, and wheeling safer and more convenient for people of all abilities, the scheme aims to encourage more residents and visitors to choose active travel, supporting healthier lifestyles and improved wellbeing. This forms part of our ongoing commitment to creating a more sustainable and liveable city.

Summary of Proposals

The proposals include:

    • A segregated cycleway at carriageway level with permanent kerbed separation along Westbourne Terrace from Craven Road to Orsett Terrace, continuing with bolt down kerb separation across Westbourne Terrace Bridge to the A40 Westway junction.

    • Cycle improvements at the Westbourne Terrace/Bishops Bridge Road junction, including early release signals for cyclists from the northern arm, and advanced stop lines for cyclists from the southern, eastern, and western arms.

    • Pedestrian improvements, including an upgrade to crossings at Westbourne Terrace/Bishops Bridge Road to provide straight across crossings that enable a more direct route for pedestrians. In addition, new signalised pedestrian crossings are proposed at the junction with Westbourne Terrace and Cleveland Terrace.

    • Introduction of surface dressing at the intersection of Chilworth Street to further highlight the presence of cyclists.

    • New cycle crossing provisions north of Westbourne bridge to enhance active travel connectivity to Little Venice and surrounding areas.

    • Minor changes to loading arrangements north of Bishops Bridge Road are proposed, however, the existing “no loading and no parking” restrictions along the rest of Westbourne Terrace, implemented during Phase 2, will remain unchanged.
