You Said, We Did: Portland Place
Westminster City Council consulted residents on proposals to make permanent the temporary cycle lanes along Portland Place, first introduced in 2020 to support active travel during the pandemic. The scheme aims to improve safety and encourage walking and cycling, while aligning with the Howard de Walden Estate’s long-term public realm vision.
The consultation ran from 7 May to 23 June 2024, extended to correct an error in parking data. It included a letter drop to 837 nearby properties, outreach to key stakeholders, and a public drop-in event.
What residents told us:
- Most respondents felt the proposals would positively impact walking and cycling, making these modes more attractive.
- A moderate reduction in private vehicle use was anticipated.
- Feedback on public transport was largely neutral or positive.
- Open comments and emails provided valuable insights into concerns and suggestions, helping shape the next steps of the scheme.
The Council will use this feedback to refine the proposals and ensure they respond to local needs.
