14th Street Improvements
Initially constructed in 1950-51, NW 14th Street from Buckeye west was built as US Highway 40 bypass to skirt the Buckeye and NW 3rd Street residential and commercial districts.
Plans had been in the works for the reconstruction of 14th Street from Buckeye to just west of Vine Street. In early 2021 the City of Abilene submitted a project grant application to the newly formed KDOT cost-share program. The City was awarded a $1 million grant. The project was $3.5 million. It included constructing dedicated center turn lane with curb and gutter that transitions to 4 lanes and then joins the 5-lane configuration at the west Buckeye approach.
The project also included new sidewalk along the north side of 14th street and extending the existing sidewalk on the south side, some of which will be shared paths for pedestrians and bicyclists. Also included are additional street and walk lighting, and several hundred feet of improved storm drainage structures.
On August 16, 2024, the road portion of the project completed and was re-opened to traffic, with final work on the sidewalks and intersection of 14th Street and Mulberry to complete soon after.
Projects like this are great additions to our infrastructure and community!
The drone footage shared here was captured on August 21,2024, and shows the completed road traveling east and west. We thank the community for their patience during this robust improvement project!
