Urban Growth Boundary Update 2024

Buellton Urban Growth Boundary Update

In 2008, a groundbreaking initiative to protect the integrity of the City of Buellton and the quality of life of its residents was set in motion – the establishment of an Urban Growth Boundary (UGB). This rigorous initiative was designed to shield the land use objectives and development policies outlined in the Buellton General Plan from transient politics, and to prevent undue conversion of agriculture, watershed, and open space lands to non-compatible uses without substantial public deliberation and consensus.

As we approach the end of the initial UGB tenure set in 2025, a planned extension is under proactive consideration. Our conscientious city staff has prepared a draft revision of this extension that aims to provide a continued shield for our city's cherished quality of life. It underscores our commitment to preserving the unique agricultural, watershed, and open space elements of the Santa Ynez Valley, while also accounting for future development needs for the next 12-16 years. This proposed extension shown on the maps on this page serves as a jumping-off point for engaging community conversations, helping us shape and refine our final ballot measure. It is essential that we include resident and business perspectives in our decision-making process to ensure the continued prosperity and quality of life found in the City of Buellton.

This page will be used to put out information on the UGB process. Please sign up for updates, and participate in engagements that occur. Please also note that this page will be updated from time to time and that the information found here will change as the process moves forward. Such changes are a part of the anticipated process, and should be expected. If you have questions, please send the City Manager an email. The ability to answer general questions about the process individually may be limited, but such questions are expected to be incorporated into "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQ) documents found in the "Supporting Documents" section at the bottom of the page. Your patience and participation are appreciated.
