Phase 2 of the Ham Reid Road Extension Project Groundbreaking
We’re excited to officially break ground on Phase 2 of the Ham Reid Road Extension Project!
Ham Reid Road Extension Project
The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury held a groundbreaking Friday for the second phase of the Ham Reid Road Extension Project, which, when completed, will fulfill an east-to-west corridor from Lake Street to Big Lake Road.
The project will complete the west leg of the extension, connecting Ham Reid Road to Big Lake Road (LA 384) and Graywood Parkway. It will also include the installation of a roundabout at the intersection of these roads.
“This project is about creating a safer, more efficient intersection that supports the growth happening along Ham Reid Road and Big Lake Road,” said Nicholas Johnson, Parish Engineer. “It took strong teamwork, close coordination with our partners, and steady community support to bring this improvement from a concept to reality.”
“We’re excited to break ground on Phase 2 of the Ham Reid Road Extension and continue the progress in this area,” said Police Jury President Brian Abshire. “This phase moves us closer to a continuous corridor connecting Lake Street to Big Lake Road and will significantly relieve traffic on Country Club Road, while the addition of a roundabout will help create safer intersections for our citizens.”
The roundabout is being named in honor of the late Captain Brian Michael Bourgeois, who served in the United States Navy as a Navy SEAL. He was the commanding officer of SEAL Team Eight at the time of his passing in 2021. During his career, he served in multiple special warfare assignments and demonstrated a steadfast commitment to leadership, service and the mission of the Naval Special Warfare community.
The first phase of the Ham Reid Road Extension Project, completed in June 2025, began at Elliott Road and extended Ham Reid Road approximately 0.9 miles to the west. It included the installation of a roundabout at Elliott Road and added a connection to Vincent Road. The project was one of the first in the area to use a Low-Impact Design (LID), which included large multiuse sidewalks and extensive landscaping.
Phase 2 will begin in two to three weeks after utility relocation is finished. The estimated completion date is early 2028.
