A new three-story Judicial Comlplex building is coming soon! It will be located behind the Magnolia Building, facing Kirby Street, and will complement the historic courthouse nearby.

This 108,000-square-foot building will bring together all parts of the district court—family, juvenile, civil, and criminal—under one roof. It will include 11 courtrooms, waiting areas, jury rooms, judge and staff offices, and spaces for related departments like the District Attorney, Public Defender, and Clerk of Court. Separate holding areas will be included for both adults and juveniles.

The existing courthouse on Lakeshore Drive will stay open during construction, with added handicap parking and easy access for the public (including early voting). Once the new courthouse is up and running, the current judicial building will be demolished, making room for a new green space called Calcasieu Square and a walkable area connecting nearby parking lots.

Construction is anticipated to begin in mid-August 2025, with a groundbreaking ceremony expected around the same time. The project is expected to take just under two and a half years to complete, finishing in the first quarter of 2028. All dates are preliminary and will be refined as the contractor finalizes their schedule.

"By bringing all district court services under one roof, we’re improving efficiency, accessibility, and collaboration. It will also significantly enhance the safety and security of our judges, staff, and everyone who visits the complex. At the same time, we’re saving long-term costs by reducing the need to maintain multiple aging buildings. It’s a smart investment that will serve the parish well for generations to come."
