Advanced Water Metering Project Begins This Fall

The City of Denton is beginning the first phases of a citywide project to replace existing water meters with advanced meters that will provide more timely and accurate water-use information to customers - including early leak detection.

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Initiative

The City of Denton is beginning the first phases of a citywide project to replace existing water meters with advanced meters that will provide more timely and accurate water-use information to customers - including early leak detection.

On April 21, 2026, Denton City Council approved a contract with Badger Meter, LLC to implement the City’s advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system. The full project is expected to be completed in mid-2029.

What to Expect This Fall
Residents will begin seeing meter replacements in September as the City moves through two initial phases before citywide installation begins.

Proof-of-Concept: Sept. 17–23, 2026
The contractor will replace approximately 50 water meters and meter boxes during this initial phase. Most of the work will take place in the Nottingham Woods neighborhood, north of University Drive between E. Sherman Drive and Nottingham Drive, with a few additional locations throughout Denton.

This small-scale phase will allow the City and contractor to test the new equipment and systems before moving into the larger pilot phase. The proof-of-concept locations are shown as red dots on the attached map.

Pilot: Oct. 12–Nov. 6, 2026
Approximately 750 water meters and meter boxes will be replaced during the pilot phase. Work will take place in neighborhoods throughout Denton, with larger concentrations in areas where the City has historically experienced challenges obtaining meter reads.

The pilot will help the City identify and address any issues before citywide installation begins. Pilot locations are shown as green dots on the attached map.

Citywide Installation: Beginning mid-December 2026
Full installation will begin in mid-December. Crews will work through the City’s utility billing areas, generally focusing on one neighborhood at a time. The City expects to replace approximately 1,250 meters and meter boxes each month, with the project anticipated to be completed in mid-2029.

How Residents Will Be Notified
Residents will receive advance notice before crews arrive in their neighborhood:

-General project letter: Residents within the proof-of-concept and pilot areas will receive a letter by the end of this week. Residents citywide should receive the general project letter by the end of September.

-Postcard: When crews are scheduled to begin work in a neighborhood, households will receive a postcard approximately two weeks in advance.

-Automated call: Residents will receive an automated call approximately 72 hours before their scheduled meter replacement.

The automated call will remind residents to make sure their water meter is accessible and not blocked by vehicles, gates, landscaping, or other obstructions. No action is needed beyond ensuring crews can access the meter.

After crews visit a property:
-If the meter is successfully replaced, the household will receive a confirmation door hanger.

-If the meter cannot be replaced, the household will receive a door hanger with information about next steps.

Residents can find project information, maps, frequently asked questions, and updates at www.cityofdenton.com/AMI. The Discuss Denton page also includes examples of the letters, postcards, and door hangers residents will receive throughout the project.
