DEPLOYMENT TIMELINE UPDATE: Advanced Water Metering Project
The proof-of-concept phase of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) implementation originally scheduled from Sept. 17- Sept. 23, will now shift to Sept. 22- Sept. 28.
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Initiative
The proof-of-concept phase of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) implementation originally scheduled from Sept. 17- Sept. 23, will now shift to Sept. 22- Sept. 28.
As a reminder, the proof-of-concept phase involves the replacement of 50 meters and their meter boxes. This step is designed to verify system integrations and support the first round of testing. Work will primarily occur in the Nottingham Woods neighborhood, located north of University Drive between E. Sherman Drive and Nottingham Drive, with a few additional meter replacements at strategic locations across the City. Please see the red dots on the attached map for a visual reference.
On April 21, 2026, the Denton City Council approved a contract with Badger Meter, LLC to proceed with the implementation of an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). This initiative includes the installation of advanced customer water meters, communication networks, and data management systems that will provide real-time water use information to both City staff and residents. Full implementation is anticipated by 2029.
Over the summer, staff has been working behind the scenes on initial project coordination, performing workshops with internal stakeholders to create project documents, initiating software integrations, and cleaning meter boxes in preparation for their replacements. Beginning in September, the community will gradually begin to see the public-facing phases of the project:
Proof-of-Concept (NEW DATES): Sept. 22–Sept. 28, 2026
- Crews will replace ~50 meters to test equipment.
- Primary area: Nottingham Woods neighborhood (north of University Dr., between E. Sherman Dr. and Nottingham Dr.).
Pilot Phase: Oct. 12–Nov. 6, 2026
- Crews will replace ~750 meters across various Denton neighborhoods. These replacements will be distributed across the City, with larger concentrations in neighborhoods that have historically experienced challenges with meter reads. This pilot will simulate a small-scale deployment, allowing us to gather feedback from affected customers and make adjustments before moving into full project deployment. Please see the green dots on the attached map for a visual reference.
Citywide Deployment: Beginning mid-December 2026
- Replacement routes will align with the City’s 21 utility billing cycles to ensure smooth billing transitions and will focus work on one neighborhood at a time. The project goal is to replace roughly 1,250 meters and boxes per month, with anticipated completion in mid 2029.
How You Will Be Notified
As crews move into your area, you will receive:
- A general project letter in the mail.
- A reminder postcard roughly two weeks before work starts.
- An automated call 72 hours before replacements are made.
What You Need to Do
No action is needed from you except ensuring our crews have clear access to your water meter! Please make sure it is not blocked by vehicles, gates, landscaping, or pets. After crews visit a property, they will leave one of two door hangers:
• If the meter is successfully replaced, the household will receive a confirmation door hanger.
• If the meter is not replaced, the household will receive a door hanger explaining next steps.
