Municipal Parking Lot Improvements

Project Summary

The Town of Nantucket is undertaking a comprehensive survey and assessment of four municipal parking lots to identify and recommend targeted improvements. The project aims to enhance functionality and sustainability by exploring reconfiguration and traffic flow options, maximizing capacity, improvement to stormwater draining and management, and evaluating the potential for new lighting, signage and other enhancements.

This initiative reflects Nantucket’s ongoing commitment to improving island transportation, addressing parking demand and reducing vehicle congestion. By optimizing our parking infrastructure, the Town seeks to provide more efficient, accessible and environmentally conscious solutions that support the needs of residents and visitors while preserving the island’s unique character.

Project Overview

The Town of Nantucket, in partnership with our partner McClure Vision, is conducting a detailed survey and assessment of four key municipal parking lots:

  • Jetties Beach Parking Lots (Upper and Lower)
  • 37 Washington Street
  • 131 Pleasant Street
  • 2 Fairgrounds Road

This project aims to evaluate the current conditions of these lots and propose targeted improvement efforts to enhance their functionality, accessibility, and sustainability. Key areas of focus include:

  • Reconfiguration and Layout Optimization: Exploring ways to improve traffic flow and maximize parking capacity.
  • Stormwater Drainage and Management Improvements: Implementing solutions to mitigate flooding and enhance environmental resilience.
  • Lighting and Signage Enhancements: Improving safety, visibility, and wayfinding for users.

By addressing these critical areas, the Town seeks to create efficient and user-friendly parking facilities that meet the growing needs of residents and visitors.
This effort aligns with Nantucket’s broader commitment to improving island transportation, supporting parking demand management, and reducing congestion. The upgrades will not only benefit the community but also reflect the Town’s dedication to sustainability and preserving the island’s unique charm.
