One-Way Traffic Pattern & Lane Closures

Work Details
Phase 2 of the Hersey St. Sewer Separation Project is scheduled to begin on April 20. To facilitate construction by Pratt and Sons, traffic patterns on Ocean Avenue will be significantly altered:
• One-Way Traffic Only: Ocean Avenue will be reduced to a single lane. Traffic will only be permitted to travel from Forest Avenue toward Walton Street.
• 24/7 Impact: This traffic pattern will remain in effect 24 hours a day for the duration of this phase.
• Duration: This is a long-term closure; please plan your commutes accordingly.
• Traffic Control: A traffic officer will be stationed at the Forest Avenue intersection during active work hours to assist with flow.

Motorist Guidance
The contractor will install detour and construction signage throughout the vicinity. We strongly advise motorists to:

1. Follow all posted signs and exercise caution near the work zone.
2. Seek alternate routes to avoid significant delays.

Why is this project happening?
This initiative is part of the City’s ongoing commitment to the U.S. EPA to eliminate combined sewer overflows (CSOs) into Back Cove.
The Goal: Our current system often combines wastewater from homes and businesses with stormwater from our streets. During heavy rain, this system can overflow, discharging untreated water into the Cove. This project separates those systems, ensuring wastewater goes to the East End Treatment Plant while stormwater is managed safely, protecting our local environment and water quality.
