Tree Survey Clarification: Tagging

We’ve received several questions about the white ribbons currently visible on trees. We want to clarify that white ribbons do not indicate that a tree is marked for removal.

We’ve received several questions about the white ribbons currently visible on trees. We want to clarify that white ribbons do not necessarily indicate that a tree is marked for removal. Property surveys are progressing in the Knollwood Heights area, and as surveyors mark the edge of the right-of-way (ROW), they are also marking all trees within the ROW with white flagging and a unique identifier. These markings will be used by representatives of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to conduct surveys and assess potential red-cockaded woodpecker habitat. Please note: if a previously unmarked tree now has white flagging, this does not mean the tree will be removed.

These ribbons are temporary identifiers used by our surveyors as part of a required tree inventory for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s red-cockaded woodpecker habitat analysis. This survey is one of many steps we’re taking to ensure that any tree removal associated with the upcoming sewer rehabilitation work is limited to only what is absolutely necessary and done in compliance with environmental regulations.

Please do not remove tree ribbons or property markers. They are essential for documentation and coordination, and their removal could hinder our ability to reduce impacts to trees and natural areas.

We understand and share residents’ concerns about preserving the character of our tree canopy and appreciate your cooperation as we work through this important infrastructure project with care and transparency.
