News

Surrey County Council have developed proposals to improve road safety on the A25 West Street, Reigate. We are keen to get the views of residents, Local Members, businesses and other key stakeholders on our proposals. We had originally planned to have a face to face drop in consultation event on 30 May. This has been postponed due to the general election being called, and a new date will be arranged to take place after the election in due course. You will be able to come along and view detailed designs and watercolour illustrations of the works that are proposed. County Council Officers will be on hand to answer any of your questions.

In summary, the scheme consists of resurfacing West Street between Flanchford Road and The High Street. The central hatching will be removed to allow space for wider and lightly segregated cycle lanes. Two pedestrian islands will be removed and replaced with zebra crossings. Bus stop carriageway marking will also be added to improve access for buses. For more information, plans and artist impressions, see below.

Benefits of the road safety upgrades included on A25 West Street:

  • Better for people who drive; the entire road will be resurfaced at the same time of the road safety improvement works. This will remove any existing potholes or patching that has failed. It will also make travelling in and out of Reigate easier and more comfortable as cyclists will be physically segregated from vehicles. These works will reduce the likelihood of vehicles getting caught behind cyclists and having to wait to overtake them, meaning journey times will be improved.
  • Better for people who walk or wheel; we are proposing to provide two zebra crossing facilities, which will improve compliance with the 30mph speed limit and to make it easier and safer to cross the road. Cyclists will also have their own segregated cycle lane, so the likelihood of a cyclist passing pedestrians on the footway are reduced. This is a concern to elderly pedestrians and/or vison and mobility impaired pedestrians and removing this concern will encourage more pedestrians to feel safer.
  • Better for people who cycle; we are proposing to provide wider, segregated cycle lanes which will be protected from motor vehicles. Cyclists will also be separated from pedestrians and will have priority over side road junctions. The segregated facilities will also improve compliance with the 30mph speed limit and will offer a safer route knowing all road users will be in their own dedicated lane. Less experienced and/or younger cyclists will feel safer knowing they are not in direct conflict with vehicles. The road is also being resurfaced, meaning potholes will be removed. This reduces the likelihood of conflicts and having to swerve to avoid any depressions in the road surface.
  • Better for people who use buses; we are proposing to provide bus stop “cages” (Clearway road markings) to ensure bus stops are not blocked by any parked vehicles, meaning buses will be able to line up at the kerbs. This makes it easier and safer for bus passengers to get on or off buses.
