20mph speed limit area

Improving road safety is one of the key objectives of the Local Street Improvements programme. To achieve this, we are looking at proposing 20mph speed limits in the streets of the Walton-on-Thames area.

Currently, Surrey has among the highest number of pedestrian and cyclist road casualties of any local authority. 81% of these pedestrian casualties took place on 30 mph speed limit roads, with nearly all involving collision with a motor vehicle. Similarly, 69% of cycling casualties took place on 30 mph speed limit roads, with 79% of these resulting from collisions with a motor vehicle.

Enhancing residents' confidence to walk, wheel or cycle through lower speed limits will contribute to the objectives of Surrey County Council's Local Transport Plan 4 and contribute to National Highway's Strategic Plan vision of connecting the country safely and reliably by reducing the congestion associated with road collisions.

Lower speeds will provide a range of benefits for those who walk, wheel and cycle including:

Reduced risk and severity of collisions.

Making places easier and more pleasant to walk, wheel and cycle and will help sustain local shops and businesses.

Reduced carbon emissions, air and noise pollution, supporting the objectives of Surrey's Climate Change Strategy.

Improved health and wellbeing of Surrey residents, thus supporting the objectives of Surrey's Health and Wellbeing Strategy for improving community safety.
