Proposals in Chertsey Riverside

Zone Boundary

Following feedback from the second round of engagement, proposals have been updated to make the streets in this area safer, healthier and more attractive with appropriate vehicle speed limits and improved facilities for walking, wheeling and cycling. For the full designs, please see the pdfs at the bottom of the page.

The proposals include:

Area wide proposals

  • Side road junction improvements including ensuring tactile paving and dropped kerbs are provided where required, building out footways to tighten the junction bell mouths thereby reducing crossing distances, and adding double yellow lines at the junction to improve visibility. These changes meet the objective to make walking and wheeling more accessible and safer for all users in this area.
  • Double yellow lines are proposed at junctions (as noted above) and on certain bends where visibility is poor.
  • Several locations are identified as suitable for public realm improvements including street furniture, trees and other planting. More information can be found on the trees, planting and sustainable drainage tile.
  • It is proposed that a 20mph speed limit zone is implemented. More information can be found on the 20mph speed limit area tile.
  • Wayfinding including improved signposting to key destinations (e.g. schools, shops and railway stations) is also proposed across Chertsey Riverside. We would welcome your suggestions for key destinations that are nearby on foot or by bicycle that you think should be signposted or could benefit from better wayfinding information.

Entry points to the zone

  • At the A317 Chertsey Road - Roakes Avenue junction, proposals include tightening the junction and reducing the size of the existing traffic island. This will help to reduce vehicle speeds as they enter the area and improve safety levels for cyclists and pedestrians who are crossing the road. In the space created from building out the junction, public realm improvements are proposed including a gateway feature.
  • At the A317 Chertsey Road - Wheatash Road junction, a raised table is proposed. This will serve as a traffic calming measure whilst also improving accessibility for those crossing the road. Dropped kerbs, tactile paving and existing double yellow lines will be refreshed.
  • Both public footpaths in the zone will have their existing signs replaced with new 'cyclist dismount' signs and proposals include cutting back vegetation to improve the pedestrian environment.

Other locations

  • At the bend on Roakes Avenue (before it becomes Wheatash Road), a new footway is proposed on the pedestrian desire line. A dropped kerb and tactile paving will also be added, allowing all users to safely cross the road. This proposal is subject to further survey work.

Please provide your feedback on the proposals via our survey.
