June Newsletter - Sulphur Springs Neighborhood Action Plan

SS NAP June Newsletter - Project Update, Survey Results, and City Council

We are excited to share this June newsletter for the Sulphur Springs Neighborhood Action Plan!

In between our official community engagement activites, we want to make sure we are keeping you up to date on the hard work City staff and our project team is putting into the Sulphur Springs neighborhood.

This month, our project team is working on finalizing the Phase 1 report, which we plan to share with you all in July. We met with our Technical Working Group, made up of various City departments doing work in the neighborhood, on June 12th to discuss some initial actions that could be taken to address the wants and needs communicated to us in our Phase 1 community engagement.

In this newsletter, we wanted to include a summary of the responses from the Phase 1 survey.

We asked people what they loved most about Sulphur Springs - we heard that you all love the access to the river, parks, and nature, as well as the history of the community!

We asked people to rate on a scale of 1 to 5 stars access and quality of various community amenities - access to nature and the river and preservation of historic assets were big winners again with the most 5 star ratings. With the most one-star ratings, we also heard that community events and educational opportunities could be much better.

We asked what physical improvements would benefit Sulphur Springs the most - we heard that additional/improved park amenities, preserved natural areas, and greater access to the river are all top priorities!

We asked what types of new or improved development you would like to see in Sulphur Springs - results show you would love to see more food shops, community gardens, historic structure presevervation, and repurposing of existing buildings!

We asked which programs and services should be expanded/introduced - responses ranked homeownership programs, housing and commercial rehabilitation grants/loans, and youth programs as the top priorities for the neighborhood.

We asked what issues are affecting Sulphur Springs the most - Two-thirds of respondents told use that crime and public safety and environmental damage and pollution are major issues in the community.

We asked what the most important issues for the City to addess in Sulphur Springs - crime and public safety was ranked as the number one issue by far, followed by unsafe roads and, environemental damage, and rising housing costs and gentrificiation.

The City Council item on June 26th to discuss what the City plans to put in the budget for Sulphur Springs has been continued to September 4th, 2025. We will keep you all up to date if any further items about Sulphur Springs come up at City Council.
