Background

Highlighting the continuing 'personal injury collisions' (PIC's) at this busy intersection

Local Safety Scheme - Great Western Road J/W Westbourne Park Rd

Background

WCC are committed to road safety and periodically undertake a review of all 'personal injury collisions' (PICs) across Westminster. We specifically target locations with two or more 'serious' PIC's for further investigation and design of measures to reduce both the frequency and severity of PIC's.

This approach is in line with the Mayor of London's 'Vision Zero' road safety strategy which aims to eliminate all 'Killed and Seriously Injured' (KSI's) from London's roads by 2041.

This location had recorded seven collisions including two serious incidents over three years. Of which four involved pedestrians, including the two serious, with the remainder involving vehicles conflict at this busy location.

Following detailed review by engineers who looked at possible raised tables, additional zebra crossing and taking into account the proximity to schools, shopping and transport facilities the most robust solution in addressing PIC's is to install traffic signals to allow vehicle movement without conflict and provide safe pedestrian crossing facilities on all arms.

The anticipated PIC reduction is significant with these proposals and should reduce casualties at this location from to only one per year or less.
