Inclusive Playground at St. Mary’s Churchyard

Following public engagement in April 2025, the delivery of a new inclusive playground for St Mary's Churchyard on Paddington Green was selected as the first priority project to be taken forward.

The Council is proposing an expansion of the existing playground along the eastern edge of the churchyard, increasing its size threefold. The increase in size will enable a richer, accessible, and more inclusive play offer, incorporating a variety of zones designed for different age groups and abilities, as well as improved landscaping, seating, and accessible pathways.

The project also aims to address long-standing issues in the surrounding area, including limited inclusive play provision, conflicts of use between different groups, and anti-social behaviour at Paddington Green.

Focus user group engagement

The Council led focus group workshops through September 2025, engaging parents and carers of children with SEND, over 85 students from two local schools as well as attended school meetings with parents. This has informed both the design, specification and equipment selection.

This included four workshops called 'Stick Together' with 85 local primary school children from Ark King Solomon Academy and L’Ecole Bilingue Elementary, aimed to identify the dreams, aspirations and priorities for the new playground.

RIBA Stage 3 proposal

The designs have been progressed and currently the Council is procuring a contractor that can deliver this project from spring 2026. Due to the Churchyard being owned by the Church, Faculty Approval (equivalent to the Council’s planning process) is required before any works on site can progress.

Project Status

The Inclusive Playground has now received Faculty Approval from the Diocese, marking an important step forward for the project. We will keep you informed as the project progresses and will share further updates in due course.
