Para garantizar la navegabilidad continua, el puerto de Black River se somete a un dragado anual. Con el apoyo de fondos del Departamento de Recursos Naturales de Ohio y la Agencia de Protección Ambiental de Ohio, la recién construida instalación de reutilización de materiales de dragado de Black River en la ciudad de Lorain está preparada para recibir hasta 75,000 yardas cúbicas de material dragado a partir de julio de 2024.
